![]() There’s been a lot of demand from Xbox fans to port the cult-classic Age of Empires games to Xbox consoles, and World’s Edge, the studio overseeing the development of Age of Empire games said that it took time to really optimize the game’s controls for Xbox controllers. It’s quite difficult to port real-time strategy games on consoles, though Microsoft successfully pulled it off before with the Halo Wars series. ![]() ![]() Age of Empires II: DE will be released on January 31, 2023, and Age of Empires IV will follow later in the year. I’d mainly then just worry about the Xbox players who don’t have a keyboard/mouse asking (or demanding?) for it to be revised to work with a controller… and then to be simplified for the console play… and then, and then, and then.As Microsoft is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Age of Empires franchise today, the company has just announced that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV are coming to Xbox consoles in 2023. Yeah, if keyboard and mouse are options for Xbox and are required to play AoE4… then go for it. This console mentality is entirely possible, but probably not likely thankfully. Hopefully no AoE4 controls or gameplay elements for the PC will be nerfed or consolized in anticipation of some future existence on consoles and their controllers. Lucky for us they’re focusing on doing it exclusively for PC first, or so it seems. If devs figure out a way to do AoE4 on a console using a console controller, I’m sure they’ll do it. Trying to play adventure games like those on consoles is a nightmareĭon’t underestimate the power of consoles. Thankfully, their PC versions had mouse/keyboard control support. I’d say you can’t play adventure games like Monkey Island and Telltale’s Walking Dead with a controller, but it was done. Problem is you can’t play a rts with controllerīut xbox has mouse/keyboard support,so i think xbox players can play aoe4 with mouse/keyboard If those franchises only saw one new game every decade or two, and they were let-downs, you might understand how precious a new AoE title is for me You finally get one rare opportunity to have a diamond made, and then it gets spoiled with a lot of flaws because of catering to and developing for consoles. I don’t really care or particularly like those franchises, but I know many do. I kind’ve wish Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed games only came out once every decade or two.One of these years, I hope to get a new Thief game, for example, mid- or late-console lifespan (for a mature console) so the devs aren’t trying to just do a bunch of kewl things to make it look like a shiny new object on a brand new console with little depth or replay value with poor gameplay mechanics and several control issues ![]() PS: Not sure how it always is that my favorite PC games decide to only release a new game when a new console is launching (like every 2nd or 3rd console generation) and the devs get drawn into it. Is nice IamDalv reassures with those words. If AoE4 is being developed for Xbox at the same time and the PC version suffered as a result, my top 2 or 3 video game franchises of all time would have been negatively impacted by console co-releases where the devs needed to make the game for a simultaneous PC and Xbox/console launch.Īside from those two past games that suffered graphically and control-wise due to Xbox/consoles, I see many games, in general, where it’s obvious the controls and game mechanics were made for consoles and PCs were an afterthought. Okay, there have been two main games for me, but they were biggies and AoE would be another biggie. I’ve seen too many games I love negatively impacted by the need to release it on Xbox/console(s) and PC at the same time. But no attention should be given to that plight now. Someday, maybe, for people who get a mouse/keyboard attachment for Xbox.
